This project was created for the “Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial” architecture competition, inspired by the history of the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, USA, one of the most historically significant sites in the development and testing of missile technology in the United States and closely tied to the beginning of the nuclear age during World War II. The project aims to acknowledge and honor the lives affected and lost through these histories, transforming remembrance into an immersive architectural experience.
The design was inspired by the form of a mushroom cloud created after a missile launch or explosion. The project abstracts this powerful and unsettling image into a sculptural space for reflection. Its flowing forms create a series of openings, crevices, and passages that allow visitors to physically move through the “mushroom” itself, experiencing moments of compression, release, light, and shadow within the structure.
The structure was digitally modeled in Revit through a line-based process in which each individual curve was drawn and connected to generate the overall form. These interconnected curves were then developed into a continuous shell-like architectural structure, allowing the geometry to feel both organic and immersive.Situated within a vast desert landscape, the architecture becomes both monument and experience, transforming a symbol associated with destruction into a place for contemplation, memory, and human connection.
